Barrandov Film Studios

The largest and oldest film studios in the Czech Republic and some of the largest in Europe. They are used by both Czech and foreign film productions and have been nicknamed “Hollywood of the East” due to their popularity.

New Wave

The term Czechoslovak New Wave or Czech New Wave refers to the generation of film directors and screenwriters who began working in 1960s. It is one of the pinnacles of world cinematography and the only Czechoslovak filmmaking movement to enter the history of world art. The unofficial, unorganised movement, also called “the spring of Czechoslovak film”, ended with the advent of Normalisation at the beginning of 1970s. The Czechoslovak New Wave is generally regarded as one of the most important movements in world cinematography after Italian Neorealism.

Karel Roden

Charismatic film, theatre and television actor, also active and well known abroad. One of the most distinctive contemporary Czech actors and one of a few Czech actors that have achieved success in Hollywood.

The Shop on Main Street

A film that was a watershed in Czechoslovak cinematography and foreshadowed the New Wave. It was the first Czechoslovak film to win an Oscar (1966).

Jan Svěrák

Prominent Czech director, producer and screenwriter. One of the most distinguished and successful Czech film directors active after 1989, who is also internationally recognised and has received a number of foreign awards.

Zdeněk Svěrák

Distinguished Czech film screenwriter, dramatist, actor, writer and songwriter. One of the founders and main representatives of the Jára Cimrman Theatre, as well as a foremost Czech cimrmanologist.

Three Nuts for Cinderella

A fairy tale film beloved by children and adults, famous abroad as well. One of the most beautiful and successful Czech fairy tale films and an essential part of Czech Christmas television programme.

Trick Brothers

Prominent animated film studio, closely connected with the so-called Czech school of animated film. It is the oldest and largest Czech studio of its kind and its works have been highly acclaimed internationally.

Famous Czech-American theatre and film actor, voice actor and reciter.

Večerníček

Early-evening television show with fairy-tale series, the longest running Czech television show for children. A traditional fairy tale for good night, references to which commonly appear in everyday communication.
