Detailed information

AVG stands for AntiVirus Guard, antivirus software produced by the Czech company AVG Technologies located in Prague. The company (until 2008 under the name Grisoft) chose the abbreviation AVG for their very first product, the AntiVirus Guard, appearing on the Czech market in 1992. In 1997, the first AVG licences were sold in Germany and in Great Britain, and since 1998 the company has been present in the USA. In 2016, the company AVG Technologies had more than 200 million active users all over the world (including more than 100 million on mobile devices).

In the 2010s, several international companies gave AVG awards for best free antivirus software. In July 2016, the company Avast announced its intention to buy AVG for 1.3 billion USD. In September 2019 AVG became a sister company of Avast Software.
